Pop Labs Wins 1st & 3rd Place at the Accessibility Internet Rally
Houston, TX – December 15, 2009 - Pop Labs, one of the nation's leading full service digital media agencies, received 1st & 3rd Place awards at Accessibility Internet Rally Interactive (AIR-Interactive) 2009. The awards were announced December 10, 2009, at the AIR Awards Banquet.
The competition allowed teams of four to design accessible websites in one day, a total of 8 hours, for local non-profits. Pop Labs competed and earned 1st place in Formula One and 3rd place in Stock Car Division. Formula One is for participants interested in submitting websites for advanced accessibility and Stock Car division is for websites being submitted for basic accessibility.
The 1st place winning team, Dirty Pop, built a fully-accessible website for Clayton Library Friends'. Davis Baker, a Dirty Pop team member, found the whole experience quite enjoyable, "I had a great time working with the people at the Clayton Library Foundation. They are doing great things that I myself want to look into..." The other members of Dirty Pop include Jillian Fortin, Jairo Pineda and Davis Baker. Their contact from the NPO, Barbara Shreffler, describes the event, "On Rally Day, I met our Pop Labs team. They were already busy working on the CLF site. They had divided up the duties for creating our site within eight hours. All the planning had taken place only two weeks prior. This was crunch time! I checked in with Jillian, Davis, and Jairo frequently and worried that I might have been a pest but they never complained. They worked eight hours straight! I was in awe of their commitment, expertise and talent. When they showed me the site, I thought I'd cry because it was so beautiful. I am now a huge believer in the work of AIR Houston in general and Pop Labs in particular. Every web team present that day is a winner. Each team devoted their time, talent, and heart to help non profits help the Houston community. The CLF board and I are particularly grateful for the beautiful work of Jillian, Davis, Jairo, and [our designer]] and all of Pop Labs. They have literally transformed our site into something that truly tells our story."
The 2nd team, Team Pop Rocks, won 3rd place out of 5 entries in the Stock Car Division by creating a fresh, fully-accessible site for the Ms. Wheelchair America Organization. This team had Poplabbers Jackie Martinez, Stefanie Kossegi, Kimberly Even and Bruce Gemberling. Stefanie Kossegi has this to say about participating in this year's event as a new participant, "For each of us on my team, being a first time competitor in AIR, we learned quite a bit about making the web accessible with hot keys, colorblind contrast, and more. Our wonderful contact at Ms. Wheelchair America, Angela, brought our team pageant goodies including tiaras and crowns!"
The AIR program has long-term results and provides benefits for the whole community. Web developers learn about how and why to create accessible online applications and then apply their new skills by creating an accessible website that is reviewed by accessibility experts. "The best part of AIR this year was working with a great NPO and seeing their look of astonishment with the great accessible site we gave them," says Jairo Pineda.
